Hemophilia and Diabetes: The Connection You Should Know

Hemophilia is a genetic disorder in which blood does not clot properly, leading to prolonged bleeding. But did you know that people with hemophilia may be at a higher risk of developing diabetes?

Scientific Findings

Studies have shown that older men with hemophilia, especially those infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV), are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes. This virus can affect the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels.

In contrast, younger men with hemophilia, particularly those without HCV, have a lower risk of developing diabetes.

Why This Matters

With the increased life expectancy of hemophilia patients thanks to medical advances, awareness of age-related risks such as diabetes has become increasingly important. Men with hemophilia should undergo regular diabetes screening from the age of 60 onward, especially if they are HCV positive.

Key Care Points
• Regular blood sugar screening for older individuals with hemophilia
• Paying attention to diabetes symptoms such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, extreme fatigue, blurred vision, and slow wound healing
• Maintaining a healthy weight and regular physical activity
• Consulting a physician for the simultaneous management of hemophilia and diabetes

(All these measures must be carried out under the supervision of the treating physician.)
